TWELVE TO PUBLISH DR. MEG JAY’S

SUPERNORMAL: The Secret World of the Heroic Child

March 3, 2014—Twelve Publisher Deb Futter announced the acquisition of SUPERNORMAL: The Secret World of the Heroic Child by Meg Jay, Ph.D., a revolutionary, illuminating and compassionate examination of those who have overcome childhood adversity to become high-functioning or “supernormal” adults. Futter acquired North American rights from Tina Bennett of William Morris Endeavor.

Interweaving cutting-edge research and Dr. Jay’s work with patients over nearly two decades, SUPERNORMAL tells the stories of a diverse group of adults who are united by the experience of transcending their difficult pasts.  SUPERNORMAL will change the way the world thinks about resilience as it shows that “falling up” is both more common and more complex than we acknowledge. The supernormal adult is neither a traumatized victim nor a snappy survivor. He is an everyday superhero who has made a life out of dodging bullets and leaping over buildings yet who often feels he lives behind a mask. Ultimately, SUPERNORMAL will take seriously the question of whether the mask and cape can ever be put down.

Jay said, “Our culture tends to romanticize upward mobility in all forms, but we sometimes forget about its complexities: secrets, exhaustion, alienation. Naturally, we are amazed by those who outperform their pasts, yet as we have focused on ‘How do they do it?’ we have forgotten to keep asking, ‘How does it feel?’ There is a void that lies between the literature on adversity and resilience which SUPERNORMAL will finally fill. This book will leave readers with a deep sense of understanding, belonging and compassion.”

Futter added, “Like Alice Miller’s THE DRAMA OF THE GIFTED CHILD a generation ago, SUPERNORMAL is destined to become a classic…probably an instant classic.”

Meg Jay is a clinical psychologist, professor, speaker and the author of THE DEFINING DECADE: Why Your Twenties Matter and How to Make the Most of Them Now (Twelve; 2012), which has sold more than 100,000 copies in all formats and spawned one of the most successful TED Talks to date, with nearly 6 million views in less than a year.

The book will be released in hardcover, ebook, and simultaneously as an audiobook by Hachette Audio.
